What a thrilling matchup this was! Going into Saturday's game, it was clear that both teams needed a victory. The atmosphere of the home opener felt as that of a playoff game, the crowd was pumped up and the stadium full. The Bulldogs were able to come away with a hard earned 28-27 victory, a game in which Bowie State overcame a 13 point second half deficit. Junior QB Clifton Budd absolutely torched Virginia Union's secondary, throwing for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns. Budd's performance would go on to set a new BSU passing record for yards and completions (32). WR Douglass Mcneil III was a factor as he caught 7 passes for 144 and 1TD. Defensively, the Bulldogs were outstanding as Virginia Union did not convert a single third down (0-8). Addtionally, Panther's big play receiver Joseph Jean-Pierre was shut down in this contest. (2 catches-26 yards) BSU is now 2-0 in its conference, (2-3 overall) and riding a two game winning streak. Bowie State hosts Virginia State on Saturday, October 2 at 1:00pm.
GAME SUMMARY- On its first possession, the Panthers drove 60 yards in three plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Panthers QB Aris Mcglone English threw a 27yard TD pass to WR Andre Winston. After a three and out, the Bulldogs answered on its second possession, when QB Clifton Budd found WR Douglass Mcneil in the endzone for 25 yards. The Bulldogs settled for field goals on its next two drives, as Kicker Michael Gagne nailed 24 and 30 yarders, which gave the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead. With 5:29 left in the second quarter, senior Sterling Grant Jones sacked Panther's QB Aris Mcglone English for a safety to extend the lead 15-7. However, after a Bulldogs fumble at its own 37 yard line, the Panthers were able to march to the goaline. RB Tarian Donaldson punched it in from 2 yards and the Panthers were down just 15-13 at the half. In the third quarter, Panther's RB Jerrell Washington scored from 1 yard out and now Virginia Union was back on top at 19-15. A second Bowie State fumble was returned for a touchdown by Ja'mir Drakeford. The Panthers led 27-15. But with 2:02 left in the third quarter, Budd threw an 18 yard strike to sophmore Reginald McIntyre to cut the lead to 27-21. With 12:60 remaining in the fourth quarter BSU regained the lead, and never looked back as Budd found senior Gregory Jackson in the endzone for 39 yards.
NOTES: Before the game, Coach Wilson said he wanted to see his team " play four straight quarters." Wilson has to be pleased that his team was able to rally against the Panthers.

Bowie State Bulldogs Aim for 2nd Straight Win
Virginia Union @ Bowie State 1:00pm Saturday September 25, 2010
After a 55-6 rout over Livingstone College, the Bowie State Bulldogs (1-3) return home for a key showdown against the Virginia Union Panthers(1-2). After four consecutive road games to start the season, this game features the Bulldogs in its home opener. The Bowie fans will be pumped up, and the team will look to feed off that emotion. The obvious question here is, can BSU hold on to the momentum of last week's lopsided victory? I definately think so. Improving to 2-3 is this team's focus at the moment. Virginia Union is also coming off its first win, in which it scored 55 points against Lincoln. It should be an intruiging matchup as both teams are coming off wins.
Notes on Virginia Union
The Bad: While studying the Panthers, some alarming statistics stood out to me. In Virginia Union's first 3 games it has given up 47, 57, and 31 points. That averages out to 45 points a game! The offense has lost 7 fumbles on the year, have only scored 3 rushing touchdowns, with a rushing average of 3.3. per carry. This team has not scored in the first quarter so far this year
The Good: The passing game of the Panthers is lethal; 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 15.1 yards per reception. The leading receiver has 20 catches for 363 and 4 touchdowns in just 3 games.
* The key for Bowie is to establish the lead early. The defense of the panthers has not played well thus far this season, so BSU should be able to score often in this contest. Defensively, the bulldogs have played well, only allowing 17 points per game. If Virginia Union's ariel attack is contained Bowie has a greater shot at winning.
